Birth Centre Amersfoort x Birthpools
Birth centre Amersfoort works with the mobile, single-person Birth Pool in a Box Pro and offers water births for both outpatient and clinical births.
The birth centre has two birthing pools available, which are kept inflated and ready to use in the two delivery rooms. This means they can be used immediately when a client chooses a water birth. It allows for a fast and efficient setup, without any extra preparation time.

Which products
does Birth Centre Amersfoort use?
The workflow at the birth centre is structured in three clear steps:
The pools (starter kit)
Geboortecentrum Amersfoort started with two hospital starter kits. Each kit includes:
- A Birth Pool in a Box Pro birthing pool
- An electric air pump with storage box
- A tap splitter with matching brass connector
The tap splitter is installed at the shower, making it easy to switch between normal shower use and filling the birthing pool using a disposable water hose.
Individual disposables items
The birth centre does not work with pre-packed water birth kits. Instead, they purchase individual disposable items:
- Hygienic liners
- Water hoses with tap connectors (these connect directly to the installed tap splitter)
- Water pumps
They manage their own stock of these items and place orders with Birthpools when new stock is needed. Clients receive an invoice from the birth centre for the disposable items if they choose to use the birthing pool during labour.
Additional accessories (only when needed)
Additional accessories are purchased separately by the birth centre, such as:
- Retractable scoop nets
- Mirrors
By working with separate accessories, the birth centre avoids unnecessary waste. Extra materials are only used when they are actually needed during the birth.

FAQs
Where do you store the birth pool when it is not in use?
Many hospitals keep the pool (or multiple pools) in an inflated state, ready to use.
Some hospitals have a storage room where the pool can be rolled into, while others place the pool upright in the delivery room or bathroom.
There are also hospitals that install a hook on the wall to hang the pool while inflated.
It is also possible to pack the pool back into its bag after use. However, in practice, this is usually only done with spare pools that are used during peak demand.
How often can a mobile birthing pool be used?
The Birth Pool in a Box Pro is designed for intensive use and comes with a 50-use warranty.
In practice, we see that pools in hospitals often last longer. This is because they are usually kept inflated, which puts less strain on the material compared to home use where the pool is frequently folded and unfolded.
How much storage space do you need on the ward?
Most hospitals store water birth kits in a central storage room or supply area on the ward.
Typically, you keep a minimum of 8 to 12 kits in stock. After a new delivery, this can increase to around 16 to 24 kits.
The size of one kit is 30 x 40 x 20 cm.
For spare pools that are not kept inflated but stored in a box or carry bag, you should allow for 49 x 40 x 30 cm of storage space.
Can the floor support the weight of a birthing pool?
Yes, in most cases, a standard hospital floor can easily support a filled birthing pool.
The Birth Pool in a Box Pro weighs approximately 490 kg when filled with water.
If you include the weight of a birthing person (around 80 kg), the total load is distributed over a surface area of 1.6 m². This equals approximately 460 kg per m², evenly distributed (not point-loaded).
This falls within the safe load capacity of most standard hospital floors.
While we cannot guarantee suitability for every specific construction, our experience shows that this setup has not caused any issues. If in doubt, consult your technical department or review building specifications.
Do you need a different tap?
No. The hospital starter kit includes a tap splitter, which can be installed on the thermostatic shower tap commonly available in delivery rooms.
This allows you to easily switch between water for the shower and water for filling the birthing pool using a disposable hose.
How do you fill and empty the pool?
For each water birth, a disposable liner, water pump, and 10-metre hose with tap connector are used. The hose is used once to fill the pool and again after the birth to empty it.
To fill the pool:
- Connect the hose to the tap splitter
- Place the other end into the liner’s hose holder
After filling, disconnect the hose and store it safely to avoid tripping hazards.
To empty the pool:
- Place one end of the hose under a toilet seat
- Place the other end in the liner holder
- Connect the disposable water pump
The pump has a 5-metre cable and starts draining immediately.
Emptying takes about 30 minutes and is quiet. You do not need to stay present during this process.
When the pump starts drawing air, lift one side of the liner slightly so remaining water flows toward the pump.
After draining:
- Dispose of all single-use materials
- Clean and disinfect the outside of the pool if needed
Is there a risk of leakage when using a mobile pool?
The Birth Pool in a Box Pro is designed with safety and reliability in mind. It consists of five air chambers and a double base, and is always used with a liner placed before filling.
This design makes the risk of water damage extremely low. The liner acts as a water container, keeping all water inside the pool.
Even in the unlikely event that one or more air chambers deflate while the pool is filled, the water remains inside. The pressure of the water pushes against the air chambers, preventing water from flowing over the edge, even if the air were to fully escape.
