Did you know that changing positions regularly during labour can actually speed up the dilation phase? As a woman, you’ll usually feel intuitively which positions are best for you. However, sometimes it can be tricky to think of comfortable positions on your own. With a water birth, moving between positions becomes easier because you feel weightless in the warm water. Plus, the water makes it easy to try vertical positions, using gravity to your advantage. Curious about which positions you can try while giving birth in water? Keep reading!

Kneeling while leaning on the edge of the birth pool

A popular and comfortable position during water birth labour is kneeling on the soft bottom of the birthing pool, resting your arms or head on the edge. The edges of the Birth Pool in a Box are extra wide and sturdy, providing great support without the discomfort of a hard pool edge. And thanks to the inflatable bottom of this birthpool, you can comfortably maintain this position without hurting your knees.

Sitting with support from the integrated seat

If you’d like extra support during your birth in water, you can sit in front of the integrated seat inside the birthing pool. The seat offers comforting counter-pressure on your back, especially helpful if you experience back pain during labour. You can relax while the warm water eases muscle tension and provides natural pain relief.

A deep squatting position

A birth pool makes it easy to adopt a deep squatting position. Use the integrated seat as you would use a birthing stool. The water significantly reduces pressure on your legs and knees, while gravity gently helps your baby move deeper into your pelvis. Many women find this an ideal position to effectively push.

In the pool together with your partner

Another wonderful option during your childbirth in water is to join your partner in the birthing pool. Your partner can sit comfortably on the seat while you settle between their legs, leaning back against them for support and relaxation.

Try out various positions

Every labour is unique, and every woman has her own preferences. The great thing about water births is the freedom to easily switch positions, helping you naturally discover what works best for you. Feel free to try different positions, both inside and outside the water, and trust your instincts—your body often knows exactly what it needs during labour. Your midwife will also gladly help you find positions that encourage your labour progress.
